Buchloe dactyloides (Buffalo Grass)

Buffalo grass grows mostly in the North American prairies. They have a dry climate during the summer, and a very cold and windy climate in the winter. Buchloe is a warm-season, native short-grass. It grows 2 to 5 inches tall and spreads about six to 12 feet. It has a round hollow stem with gray, green curly leaves. In winter it turns tan and in the autumn it turns lavender.. In dry seasons it gets brown, and stops growing, and goes dormant. It is also heat and cold resistant

Ground cover to 4” high, spreading by runners. Beautiful dark green leaves with broad white borders and white flowers in spring. Occasional large, edible strawberries, but not as bearing as the other varieties. Zones 3-8.

A shade tolerant herbaceous groundcover with an attractive green, yellow, and red variegation that is most pronounced in full sun. Spreads widely with underground rhizomes. Will grow well in very wet conditions, and does well in average soils with some shade. Grows to 18". Zone 6

Mazus radicans

Super cool creeper that is brown/green/splotched with black in color. Incredibly tight to the ground and grows well, but not insane as other varieties of Mazus. Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue'

A semi-prostrate, spreading plant growing to 8" tall. Featuring spires of tiny, round, blue flowers, which bloom in late April-May. May re-bloom intermittently throughout the summer. Foliage is reddish-green in spring turning to deep green in summer and finally turning bronze in fall. Grow in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Remove faded flower spires to prolong bloom. If grown in the St. Louis area, 'Georgia Blue' should be grown in a protected location and given a good winter mulch since it is only winter hardy. Veronica prostrata 'Heavenly Blue'

"Heavenly Blue" forms a carpet of fine-green foliage that is decorated in late spring or early summer with countless small spikes of bright-blue flowers. A great choice for the rock garden or the edge of a sunny border. Because it takes some foot traffic, it can be planted between stones in a dry-laid walk or terrace. Speedwells were given their botanic name (Veronica) to honor St. Veronica, who was said to have wiped away Christ’s tears. Grown for their delightful, long-lasting spikes of (usually) deep-purple flowers and easy care. The name “Veronica” is thought to have arisen because markings on the flowers of some species resemble the markings on the sacred handkerchief of St. Veronica.

Full sun and well-drained soils are their only demands; otherwise they are relatively easy to grow. Speedwells provide a lively contrast with other flower shapes. They vary in height, habit, and bloom time, but all prefer full sun and well-drained soil.

Veronica x 'New Century' (Speedwell)

Perennial . Beautiful newer introduction crossing Veronica liwanensis and Veronica pectinata to create a durable deep green foliage that softly creeps to form an evergreen carpet. Small, upright blue flower spikes create the illusion of a sea of blue. Foliage turns bronze in winter for added interest. Nice bed, border and rock garden addition. Vinca minor (Periwinkle, Myrtle)

A relatively fast growing groundcover with an indefinite spread. Shiny, dark green, evergreen foliage on trailing stems. Frequently roots at nodes. Perfect, 5 parted, lilac-blue flowers. Blooms profusely in spring, and shows fewer flowers all season long. Zones 4 - 7.

 
Vinca minor 'Bowles'

Most of the same attributes as the straight species. Flowers are a more intense blue and a bit larger than the species. 'Bowles' blooms more reliably and  numerously throughout the season after the primary flowering period in the early spring. Also clumps more than the straight species.  Zones 4 - 7.

Viola rostrata

A violet colored rosy purple. Like Labrador Violet, this species begins as a heavily flowered clump, then creeps along during the growing season, becoming mat-like by fall then dying back to a central crown again. Self-sows readily. Sun to shade. Blooms in May. Color: rose purple. Height: 3-6 in.  Moist

 
Viola yakusimana (Japanese Violet)

The smallest viola there is. Mounding habit of tight, tight, tight deep green teardrop-shaped leaves. Flowers are ½ the size of a pencil eraser. Will keep bloom for 4-6 weeks and will re-seed nicely. Tiny white flowers with purple and yellow throat in spring and into part of summer. Height: 1-2” Light: Full to Part Shade. Zone: 6
Waldsteinia ternata (Dry Strawberry)

This tufted, mat-forming, evergreen groundcover has a relatively slow growth rate. Spreads indefinitely and gets to be 4-6" high. Blooms from late spring to early summer with yellow flowers. Adapts to a wide range of soils. Accepts full sun to light shade.  Zone 4.
